    NORFOLK ISLAND
Stamps and First Day Covers were available from Australia Post's Philatelic Bureau in Glen Waverley, a Melbourne suburb, as were those of Christmas Island, Cocos (Keeling) Islands, and the Australian Antarctic Territory.
THE COVER: As Norfolk Island stamps were
    ONLY authorized
    for use on the island,
this first day cover was mailed with the
    addition
of a 5d Australian stamp, being the 1-ounce postal rate for internal Australian mail. It was used on 16 October 1961 (first day of issue of the Norfolk Island 1/1 definitive), and received a Melbourne slogan post machine postmark on the reverse side later the same day. FINE USE OF A MIXED-MAIL COVER
PHILATELIC HISTORY: The British colony of Norfolk Island became an Australian Territory on 1 July 1914. About 1923, efforts were made to secure distinctive postage stamps for the Island, but these were unsuccessful. The Australian Post Office assumed responsibility for the printing of Norfolk Island's own stamps from the first issue in 1947, until the early 1960s. These included an issue for Local Government on Norfolk (1960) and the 50th Anniversary of being an Australian Territory (1964).
Apart from some later Christmas and ANZAC issues, the Note Printing Branch of the Reserve Bank of Australia (Melbourne) ceased to print Norfolk stamps. The contract was awarded to Harrison & Sons, in London, starting with the 1961-62 Fish series and 1963-64 Views.
