The history of Norfolk Island and Pitcairn Island have been happily and irreversibly intertwined since June 1856, when the Pitcairners arrived "en masse" at Norfolk on the 830-ton emigrant ship, MORAYSHIRE.  Norfolk was offered to the overcrowded Pitcairners as a gift by Queen Victoria, to be their new home, after being abandoned as a Penal Colony in 1855. In 1859, and again in 1864, small groups of homesick Pitcairners returned to their native island.
    This
    stamp issue
features reproductions of historic photographs of the new immigrants, snapped on Norfolk from 1856 to 1861.  An image of "Morayshire" appears at the lower left of each stamp.
