The history of Norfolk Island and Pitcairn Island have been happily joined since 8 June 1856, when the Pitcairners arrived "en masse" at Norfolk on the 830-ton emigrant ship, MORAYSHIRE.  Pitcairn was overcrowded, and Queen Victoria offered the uninhabited Norfolk Island to be the Pitcairners' new home.
Norfolk had been abandoned as a Penal Colony in 1855.  In 1859, and again in 1864, small groups of homesick Pitcairners left Norfolk returned to their native island.
This
stamp issue
features reproductions of historic photographs of the new immigrants, snapped on Norfolk from 1856 to 1861.  An image of "Morayshire" appears at the lower left of each stamp. A unique feature of the issue is on the
gutter
between the panes of stamps. Here, names of all 194 Pitcairners aboard the "Morayshire" are reproduced, including that of the infant born on board during the 5-week voyage from Pitcairn Island.
