SUPERTUBE 12SC7 / 10EG7 STEREO TUBE PREAMP
For your consideration is this versatile stereo tube preamp. The MAG PHONO section utilizes two 12SC7 twin triodes for the amplification of the magnetic cartridge of your choice. The RIAA network is classic passive. Phono input Z is fixed with the typical 47K load impedance. The MAG PHONO circuitry is based on the 1957 RIAA conversion of the old GE topology that utilized the 6SC7 tube in their stand-alone preamps (SPX-001). Components have all been upgraded to current up-to-date passives so degradation and out-of-tolerance parts are a thing of the past. To get the sonics "correct" the following passives have been utilized: Centralab, Wima, REL-CAP, Mial, Phillips/Mullard/Mustard(60s), Arcotronics, Electrocube, Holco, To-yo films, Roederstein, Allen Bradley, Resista. And this is just the phono section! This phono section is transparent, yet free from harshness and aggressiveness due to film/foil capacitors in the signal path. If you have been using 12AX7 phono sections with active RIAA, then you must hear this phono section! The 12SC7 filaments operate on DC volts.
The LINE SECTION is comprised of two black plate 10EG7 tubes. There are five inputs that feed this LINE AMP. Front panel switch helps facilitate selection of RIAA phono or LINE INPUTS 1-4. Left and right volume controls allow tailored adjustment of level settings to your taste. Output is on the rear apron for MAIN LINE OUT.
The MAIN LINE OUT will drive just about any TUBE POWER AMP to full output! This LINE SECTION is very transparent and yet free of aggressive subtleties that plague some other line amps. Exclusive use of film/foil capacitors contribute to the truthful sonic transfer of any media source incorporated. No "guitar" capacitors were used in coupling audio between tube stages. This LINE AMP setup blows away my previous 12au7/12b4 line amps. Part of this is due in fact to the utilization of the following passives: REL-CAP, Wima, Arcotronics, Roederstein, To-yo films, Beyschlag, Holco,  Resista, Allen Bradley. There are no metallized capacitors used anywhere in this preamp's signal path!
The BLEND FUNCTION. The front panel blend switch helps in "blending" left and right channels for the following: poor mix of early stereo recordings (studio panning extreme left and right audio, for example). This can be disconcerting when listening through a headphone amp and headset. The "stereo" setting is for full separation. "A" setting is 2/3 separation of the stereo image. "B" setting is 1/3 of separation. "Mono" combines both left and right channels. I have used this to great satisfaction on my early Miles Davis recordings. This blend function can be used with both phono and line inputs.
Separate POWER SUPPLY. A 3.5ft umbilical cable keeps the power supply transformer away from sensitive sections of the preamp. A 6-pole pole filtering network keeps hum and noise held at the vanishing point. Very critical when listening through headphone amps. The 6BY5GA tube provides rectification of the main B+. Critical decoupling of B+ in the preamp and attention to ground returns in the power supply assure quiet operation during extended listening sessions.
