OLD TAILOR SHEARS OR SCISSORS
Striking and awesome old heavy iron tailor scissor shears measuring about 13″ long. Featuring amazing thick rounded grips with molded fabric rest, they are made of solid iron with black paint detail around the end — sturdy solid brass bolt is marked J. WISS & SONS U.S.A. NEWARK N.J. ~ with PATENT APPLIED FOR on the reverse – WISS is also engraved on the cutting side.
Condition is primitive with lots of wear marks, paint chipping, patination to the metal and a hint of surface rust on the cutting edge – I can rub this off with my finger – I think a light sanding with 0000 steel wool would remove this. These scissors are SO HEAVY – I can’t imagine how someone used them for hours on end – they do cut just fine and appear to work as they should. I’ve always displayed them in with a variety of antique and vintage sewing items – they have such a neat look and amazing size – wonderful addition to any sewing collection!
